The Barcelona star moved ahead of his long term competitor, Cristiano Ronaldo to claim this prestigious record, seeing off Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk and Juventus’ Ronaldo. The football star hit a record-breaking 54 goals for his club and country in the 2018-19 season.
The 32-year-old star held off the challenge of Holland center-back Van Dijk, whose brilliant performances helped Liverpool to the Champions League title.
Sadio Mane finished fourth, Cristiano Ronaldo third while Virgil van Dijk came close in second behind Messi.
