Traders are counting losses after the property of unknown value was destroyed in an early morning fire that started at a furniture shop at Githurai 44 area on Monday morning.
According to area residents, the fire whose cause is yet to be established began at around 4 am and spread fast into the adjacent shops where it consumed more furniture and items stocked in the stalls.
“The firefighters started arriving at about 4:50 am. Lots of items had been burnt but we managed to salvage a few furniture,” Lucy Njeri, a resident told Nation.
The salvaged items were strewn along the road forcing motorists moving towards Githurai to source for alternative routes to access the market.
At 8 am firefighters from Nairobi and Kiambu counties as well as the Kenya army joined efforts to put out the fire.
