SPARK OUT Southampton sack manager Mark Hughes

Southampton sack manager Mark Hughes with the club in Premier League relegation zone, Kelvin Davis takes temporary charge

The Saints have decided to act with the club sitting bottom of the Premier League Assistant manager Mark Bowen and first team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left St Mary’s, the club announced on Monday.

A Saints statement read: “We would like to express our thanks to Mark and his staff for all of their efforts during their time at St Mary’s.

“The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already under way.”

Hughes signed a new three-year contract in the summer having guided the club to safety after replacing Mauricio Pellegrino on a short-term deal in March.

But Southampton has won just one of their 14 games this season and, following the 2-2 draw at home against Manchester United on Saturday, are sitting 18th in the Premier League table.

First-team assistant coach Kelvin Davis has been placed in caretaker charge for Wednesday’s clash with Tottenham at Wembley.
