Growing Insecurity in Nigeria: Aviation Security Personnel to Bear Arms Soon

The Minister of State for Aviation, Malam Hadi Sirika, has stated that aviation security personnel of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will soon be licensed to carry arms to complement other agencies including combating security threats.

A statement by the General Manager Corporate Affairs FAAN, Mrs Henrieta Yakubu, said that the move would strengthen the integrity of the airport in view of the prevailing trend in the aviation industry.

According to a Mrs Yakubu’s statement, the Federal Government has approved the aviation security personnel to bear arms as part of the present administration’s commitment to improving the general safety of its citizenry and passengers passing through the country’s airports.

The Minister clarified in the statement that the new development was important towards making the personnel more professional and capable of meeting up with the initiative of the ease of doing business.

The Director of Security Services FAAN, Captain S.A. Sadique, said that the aviation industry was at a critical juncture in global aviation where terrorism was assuming a new dimension.
