Drama in Ebony as Governor Umahi Orders Arrest of his Deputy Chief of Staff, Others


A mild drama played out yesterday at the Government House in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, where Governor David Umahi ordered the immediate arrest of his Deputy Chief of Staff, Prof Fidelis Okpata, and other political appointees from two warring communities in Ikwo Local Government Areas of the state.

Prof Okpata and some of the appointees were seated at the exco chambers of the Government House Abakaliki in Ebonyi State for a security meeting following clashes involving their communities, Ekpomaka and Inyimagu, when they were rounded up on the orders of the governor.

Governor Umahi, who was very angry over the clashes ordered the state’s Commissioner of Police in the State, Titus Lamorde, who was also present at the meeting, to detain the appointees till the crisis was resolved.

The Governor giving the order stated as follows –

“I have declared all the elected and appointed people in these communities under arrest. So I command the arrest now including my Deputy Chief of Staff, both Udogu, Nonso Udogu, all of them are to be arrested and put in detention.

Hack will go and get a court order to detain them perpetually until they sign undertaking that no house will be burnt and there will be no crisis there.”

Opon issuing the order, the political appointees where taken into waiting police vehicles and driven to the force headquarters in Abakiliki.
