The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the commission would do everything possible to ensure that underage voting does not take place in the 2019 general election.
The chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, made the pronouncement when he lead the commission’s management team on a courtesy visit to National Population Commission (NPC) in Abuja.
Prof Yakubu said that a committee had already been set up to investigate the alleged overage voting in the local council election recently held in Kano State.
The INEC chairman called for the collaboration with the NPC in the area of area demarcation and sharing of data especially the registration of births and deaths which is the statutory responsibility of the NPC.
The chairman of the Nigeria Population Commission, Chief Eze Duruiheoma, on his part assured INEC that the synergy will further strengthen the electoral process adding that such collaboration was long overdue.
Chief Duruiheoma therefore, urged the Federal Government to release more funds to the commission to complete the enumeration and area demarcation in readiness for the next election.
