Why President Buhari Called for Single Unified Market in Africa

President Muhammadu Buhari has canvased for the speedy establishment of a single unified market in Africa to increase trade, economic ties and reduce poverty in the continent.

President Buhari made the call while presenting Nigeria’s position in favor of the report for the establishment of the continental Free Trade Area (FTA) and other issues presented by the President of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, at the 30th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Governments in Addis Ababa, Etheipia.

According to President Buhari, Nigeria wants African leaders to speed action to conclude negotiations and establish the FTA adding that the continent has missed the deadline set by the African Union in January 2012 to establish the FTA last year, but that there is another opportunity by March next year.

President Buhari explained that in a rapidly changing global economy, the FTA will provide Africa with the opportunity to achieve a significant growth driven by inter-African trade.
