The Ebonyi State Government has confirmed the death of two medical personnel following the outbreak of Lassa Fever virus at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.
Briefing newsmen, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Onwuzurike, explained that two cases have been recorded so far while four have been confirmed positive.
The outbreak was traced to a patient who was operated upon at the hospital but who contracted the virus from his village.
The said index case was treated and discharged as a test conducted at a private diagnostic center did not indicate Lassa virus positive.
It was learnt that the error of diagnosis and the eventual death of the two medical personnel who attended to the carrier would have been averted if the diagnosis unit of the teaching hospital had been up and running.
