Ministry of Agriculture to Tackle Smuggling of Agricultural Products into the Country

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has warned Nigerians against consuming smuggled agricultural products.

The Minister of State for Agriculture, Chief Heineken Lokpobiri, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, sounded the warning in an address he presented at a sensitization program organised by the ministry for stakeholders held in Abuja yesterday, December 7.

Chief Lokpobiri explained that consuming smuggle agricultural products apart from aiding economic sabotage, constitutes health hazard as those products are often preserved with toxic chemicals that can harm the body.

He said that the ministry would do all within its powers to ensure that smuggling of agricultural products into the country is reduced to the barest minimum.

Stakeholders at the program commended the ministry on its very laudable initiative and appealed to the Nigeria Customs Service and other relevant agencies to assist the ministry to succeed. They also called for more sensitization among the general public whose corporation is key if any meaningful process is to be made.
