Edo Teachers March on State Assembly over Non-Payment of Salaries

Public school teachers in Edo State yesterday, Tuesday November 28, carried out a protest march at the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin City over non-payment of their salaries and other benefits.

Speaking to newsmen during the protest, the chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers, Edo State chapter, Comrade Titus Okotie, condemned the inability of state government to pay teachers their salaries.

He maintained that such an ugly situation apart from being a disincentive to teachers, would further reduce the already lower standard of education in the country.

He argued that payment of teachers salaries should be the firs line charge for the state and federal governments.

He also express opposition to the idea of handing over the responsibility of paying teachers salaries to the local governments stating that when state governments find it difficult to pay salaries, we should not expect any better from the local governments.
