The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal, has given a three day ultimatum to commercial motorcycle riders popularly called Okada riders, to register with either of two approved associations or get arrested.
Mr Edgal gave issued the ultimatum after an emergency meeting of security stake holders including Okada riders executives in the state.
The Commissioner of Police explained that the two approved associations the riders are to register with are the National Commercial Motorcycle Owners Association and the Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State.
He warned that the police would swing into action to arrest any Okada rider operating without certified membership of any of the two organization. He explained that the need for the registration is for proper regulation of the riders for security reasons.
Reacting to the ultimatum, the chairman of Okada riders in Lagos State, Mr Pekins Tijani, said that the Okada riders would comply with the directives of the Commissioner of Police, and that they would assist in whichever way possible to assist the authorities in ensuring a secured Lagos state and the smooth running of their business.
