Today in World History (November, 7th)

On November 7, 1991, exactly 26 years ago today, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson took the world by surprise with the announcement of his sudden retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Magic Johnson made the announcement after testing positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. It can be recalled that at the time, many Americans viewed AIDS as a gay white man’s disease.

The Los Angeles Lakers star who is African American and heterosexual, was one of the first sports stars to go public about his HIV-positive status.

Till date, Johnson is revered as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He spent his entire 13-season NBA career with the Lakers, which he helped win five championships in the 1980s.
