Today in World History (August 7th)

In August 7th, 1974, exactly 43 years ago today, Philippe Petit accomplished what had seemed like an impossible feat by high-wire walking between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

To successfully execute the 1,350 feet above the ground wire walk, Philippe Petit had rigged a 450-pound cable and used a custom-made 26-foot long, 55-pound balancing pole.

In the performance which lasted for about 45 minutes, Petit passed along the wire eight times.

Although Petit’s stunt was illegal, all charges against him were dropped in exchange for a performance he did for children at the Central Park.
