The Federal Government is to unveil a new template to enhance mechanized agriculture in the country. The disclose was made over the weekend by the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbr in Markurdi, Benue State.
Chief Ogbeh said that machines capable of making multiple huge yam mounds that will cover a large expanse of land in a short period of time will be rolled out soon to help yam farmers increase their production for the local and international market.
In line with the idea of agriculture as an alternative for foreign exchange earning, the Minister informed that recently, 40-foot container of yam left for the country for the United States and that another consignment is due to depart to the United Kingdom shortly.
Chief Ogbeh listed soybeans, pineapple, and wheat as some of the crops of interest to the government because of their export potentials. He therefore affirmed the government’s unflinching support for agriculture as a sure alternative, to grow the economy and provide employment.
He also used the opportunity to condemn the calls by some Northern youths for others to vacate their part of the country insisting that they desist in order not to plunge the country into crisis.
