The reason for why up to 50 per cent of bakers in the country is currently out of business has been given by the President of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Mr. Joseph Uba.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Mr. Uba disclosed that the cost of wheat flour has gone up astronomically hence members of their association who are unable to cope have downed tools.
Mr. Uba clarified that a bag of flour which last sold at between N5,500 last year is now over N11,000. He therefore calls for governments intervention especially in the area of local production of wheat since the cost of importation of the commodity is very high.
He also urged local farmers to embark on massive production of wheat to help drive down the the price, create and maintain employment and ultimately help grow the economy.
