Aba Shoemakers Disagree with Gov. Ikpeazu

The highly renowned shoemakers at the Ariaria Market in Aba, Abia State, have disagreed with the state government over the invitation of a Chinese investor to set up shoe industry in Aba.

The shoemakers who expressed their disagreement to the Governor of the state, Chief Okezie Ikpeazu, maintained that setting up a large shoe manufacturing company in Aba by a foreign investor will stifle their business.

They urged that rather than bringing in a foreign investor to take away their business from them, the government should help them procure modern shoe-making machines to help them increase their output.

Aba is notable for locally made high quality products like shoes, bags, belts, clothes and so on that can compete with similar high quality products from anywhere around the world.

Recall that the Abia state Governor, in a move to ‘boost’ the Aba shoe industry, had invited a Chinese investor who reportedly secured a loan of $1.5 billion to set up a large shoe manufacturing plant in Aba.
