The news of the passing of the wife of the late northern political giant and founder of the defunct Northern Elements Progressive Union, Malam Aminu Kano, was made public by the grandson, Alhaji Aminu Kabara.
Late Shatu Aminu Kano whose demise, after a prolonged illness, is coming 34 years after the death of her husband, Malam Aminu Kano. She was aged 89.
It can be recalled that Mallam Aminu Kano led a socialist movement against British rule in the north during in the 1940s. Among Aminu Kano’s numerous legacies is his co-founding of the Northern Elements Progressive Union which served as a political platform that challenged what he felt was the autocratic and feudalistic actions of the Native Northern Government. His opposition at the time was against the elites which included the ruling class – emirs who were mostly Fulanis.
